school suppys for clay and pottery grades 1 to college
To get started with pottery, you need clay, shaping and carving tools, a clean workspace, and access to a kiln. Beginners should grab a standard tool kit (like Kemper Tool Kits) containing a wire cutter, wooden and metal ribs, a needle tool, a loop tool, and a sponge. The Clay
Your choice of clay depends on your project. Stoneware and earthenware are the most popular and easiest to work with for beginners. You will also need a non-porous work surface for wedging (kneading) the clay to remove air bubbles, such as a plaster bat or a canvas-covered board. Most of the small, essential hand tools can be bought together in a standard, inexpensive set: Wire Clay Cutter: Used to cut blocks of clay from the bag and to slice finished pieces off the potter's wheel.
Ribs (Wood, Rubber, or Metal): Used to smooth, shape, and compress clay, whether you are hand-building or throwing on a wheel.
Needle Tool: Essential for scoring, measuring clay thickness, and cutting straight lines.
Loop and Ribbon Tools: Used to trim excess clay and carve designs.
Fettling Knife: A thin-bladed knife used for cutting and carving slabs of clay.
Sponges: High-density sponges are needed to add moisture to the clay and smooth out the surface while working. Workspace & Cleanup
Pottery can get very messy and creates silica dust, which requires specific cleaning supplies.Buckets: You will need 2-3 buckets for water, clay slurry, and washing your tools to avoid clogging your sink.
Old Towels or Rags: For keeping hands dry and cleaning surfaces.
Apron: To protect your clothing.Specialized Equipment (Optional for beginners)
Depending on the style of pottery you choose, you may need larger equipment:
Pottery Wheel: If you want to throw pots, you will need a wheel. Beginners often start with entry-level, tabletop models like the Speedball Artista.Handbuilding Extras: If sculpting or building with slabs, a good heavy-duty Banding Wheel is highly recommended for rotating your piece as you work. Glazing & Firing
To make your pottery watertight and add color, you will need glazes and a kiln. Glazing requires.Brushes: Soft-bristled hake brushes work best for applying glaze smoothly.
Wax Resist: Liquid wax used to prevent glaze from sticking to the bottoms of your pots.
A Kiln: To permanently harden the clay and melt the glaze. Because kilns are a major investment, many beginners opt to rent kiln space at local community studios or makerspaces. In the context of ceramics and pottery, the four primary types of clay are earthenware, stoneware, porcelain, and ball clay. Each possesses distinct textures, firing temperatures, and flexibilities, making them suitable for vastly different projects. Earthenware
Characteristics: These are the oldest and most common clays used. They are highly porous, easily workable, and fire at relatively low temperatures. Earthenware retains a soft texture and earthy, natural colors like red, orange, and gray.
Common Uses: Flowerpots, traditional terracotta pieces, and decorative indoor ceramics.
Note: Because it is porous, a glaze is required to make the finished piece waterproof. Stoneware
Characteristics: A durable, earthy-toned, and sturdy clay with a coarser texture than earthenware. It is a highly versatile clay that vitrifies (becomes glass-like and non-porous) at medium to high firing temperatures.
Common Uses: Everyday dinnerware, mugs, vases, and heavy-duty functional kitchenware.
Note: It is incredibly strong and naturally water-resistant even without glaze. Porcelain
Characteristics: Known as the most delicate and refined of the clay bodies, porcelain fires at extremely high temperatures. It has a smooth, fine texture and a beautiful, translucent white finish.
Common Uses: Fine china, delicate tableware, and fine art sculptures.
Note: Porcelain can be challenging to work with and shrinks by up to 20% in the kiln, making it less forgiving for beginners.Ball Clay
Characteristics: A highly plastic (easily molded) and fine-grained clay that is loaded with carbonaceous matter. It is exceptionally strong but has a tendency to shrink excessively when fired on its own. Note: Potters rarely use ball clay entirely on its own; instead, it is blended into other clay bodies to enhance workability, plasticity, and overall strength. If you are referring to natural/geological soils rather than crafting materials, the four foundational soil types are generally classified as sand, silt, clay, and loam.
